logo-floydfest13

FloydFest isn’t just a music festival in southern Virginia.  It’s an outdoor extravaganza–an unique experience that finds itself closer to perfection each and every year.  Now in it’s 13th year, FloydFest boasts not only a stellar musical lineup, but also a plethora of outdoor activities that can be nestled between sets, allowing FloydFestivarians the chance to find their chi right in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This year’s festival, which runs from July 23-27th, offers attendees a 5-day staycation, packed with easily-accessible outdoor activities for all ages.  For 2014, FloydFest has partnered with some of the biggest names in the outdoor industry to provide festival-goers with top-notch outdoor experiences and access to the highest quality outdoor gear on the market.

Join Osprey Packs for guided hikes along the Blue Ridge trails, or challenge yourself at Vasque Footwear’s 2nd Annual 5K trail race.  If you’d rather bike the Blue Ridge, grab a free rental from Roanoke-based Starlight Bicycles  and sign up for the Belcher Mountain Beat Down.  Made possible by VA-based Tangent Outfitters and the Moonstompers Bike Club, this 16-mile mountain bike tour takes riders through the Blue Ridge on a unique hand-built, single-track trail.  If water is more of your thing, join local partner On the Water for five opportunities to take a paddling trip down a gorgeous, undeveloped stretch of the Little River.  Relax and rejuvenate back at the festival site with a round of disc golf on FloydFest’s Innova-sponsored 9-hole course, or taking a nap at the ENO Hammock lounge.  Later, join the US National Whitewater Center for a Sunday night after-party at the Beer Garden. Be sure to stop by FloydFest’s Outdoor Adventures Headquarters for trip information and sign-ups, bike rentals, trail maps, and more.

Additionally, FloydFest has paired up with the following outfitters and regional events for fun ticket giveaways and prize packages:

Chacos

The official sandal sponsor of FloydFest is giving away a pair of tickets as part of their 25th anniversary “Fit for Adventure” tour.  See them at FloydFest for fun activities, a photo booth, and chances to win footwear.

FloydFest Releases Initial 2014 Line-up

logo-floydfest13As a special pre-holiday treat, FloydFest organizers have released the initial 2014 festival line-up to the public, which looks absolutely amazing–see for yourself below.  Though not first on the list, my eyes immediately gravitated towards the words MS. LAURYN HILL.  I’ve been waiting for this lovely soulful songstress to return to the festival circuit for a long time.  It will be great to see her grace the FloydFest 13 stage!

In addition to a stellar initial line-up, the 2014 FloydFest celebration will now be FIVE FULL DAYS!  Music and festivities are slated to begin mid-day on Wednesday, July 23rd and continue through Sunday evening, July 27th.  Five-day multiday tickets will be available for purchase.

The theme for next year’s festival is FloydFest 13 – Revolutionary. FloydFest’s Facebook page has already been blowing up with “revolutionary” posts from excited fans.  Their page will feature “Weekly Revolution” entries to keep fans engaged and the excitement growing.  This week’s “Weekly Revolution” reads as follows:

Every day is a Revolution.. a literal circle around the sun, and as well an opportunity for reinvention, discovery, action, awareness, appreciation–the individual ingredients that together, over time, combine, combust and spark positive revolution…We find music festivals Revolutionary. The past decade has seen a resurgence of the outdoor music festival nearly to the point of “mainstreaming,” taking both perception and experience well beyond the stereotypical “Woodstock” experience. We find it Revolutionary that the outdoor music festival has become the preferred live music experience, and we bear firsthand witness to resulting effects of contagious positivity.

Also, in line with its ‘Revolutionary’ theme, FloydFest has established some new changes to this year’s festival based on the recommendations of fans and festival-goers from previous years.  Capacity for the event will be cut by 1300 multi-day tickets, a move geared to embrace and sustain FloydFest’s status as a boutique music festival that sells out each year well in advance of gates opening.

Tickets are on sale now, so be sure to snag yours early as this festival is sure to sell out quickly.  The 2014 FloydFest line-up will include:

Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite ~ Ms. Lauryn Hill ~ Ray LaMontagne ~ Thievery Corporation (Full Band) ~ Ziggy Marley ~ Michael Franti & Spearhead ~ Buddy Guy ~ Robert Randolph & the Family Band ~ Lettuce  ~ JJ Grey & Mofro ~ Conspirator ~ Donna the Buffalo ~ The Duhks ~ Campbell Brothers ~ The Lee Boys ~ Hackensaw Boys ~ The London Souls ~ Jonathan Boogie Long ~The Deadmen ~ 2013 On the Rise Winner: Paper Bird ~ 2013 On the Rise Winner Runner Up: Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands ~ Tauk ~ Dirty Drummer ~ and many, many more TBA.

Summer Music Festival Spotlight – FloydFest

FloydFest+_2013

The beginning of July brings fireworks, cookouts and celebration of our nation’s independence, but the month closes out with a handful of the best music festivals of the summer season.  FloydFest is definitely one on the list that deserves attention.  Held on a quiet 80-acre plateau off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd, Virginia from July 25-28th, 2013, FloydFest has climbed the festival ranks and boasts one one of the hottest musical line-ups and schedule of events on the circuit.

FloydFest is designed for the music lover who also loves the outdoors.  Festival organizers have added events and activities that take full advantage of the beautiful, sprawling outdoor space, while keeping Mother Nature at the forefront.  The Outdoor Adventures Headquarters in the Global Village will be open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm, and offers activities including disc golf, hiking, mountain biking,  river activities, trail races, and many giveaways.

For the yogis out there, the Healing Arts Village offers a place to escape and prepare for or unwind from a fabulous day of music.  Flower of Life Yoga and DJ eXperience is a one-of-a-kind installation that will feature morning Yoga sessions with some of the world’s leading DJs to provide an exquisite soundscape to Rise & Shine to.  Once the sun goes down, the village transforms into a supernaturally lit performance area, where music will be supplied through wireless headphones.  Talk about taking the experience to a whole new level!

A host of artisans  will be on hand at the Global Village, as well as several craft beer vendors, including Starr Hill, Sierra Nevada, Foothills Brewing, Breckenridge Brewery, and Lagunitas Brewing Company.  While many festivarians will be partaking in these delicious adult beverages (responsibly, of course), don’t let that deter you from bringing your family.  Families with kids are always welcome at FloydFest.  The Children’s Universe area is designed to engage kids and get them involved in the music and outdoor activities, including Taekwondo classes, rock wall climbing, open mics and tether ball.  Plus, there’s  good news for families–there are kid ticket rates and kids under the age of 6 get in FREE when accompanied by an adult.

While all of these festival perks make FloydFest a truly unique experience, the musical line-up certainly drives it home.  In terms of music, FloydFest has more than 100 musicians on 10 different stages during the four-day extravaganza.  This year is the strongest line-up yet, with some of the best headliners and up-and-comers on the festival circuit.  The final line-up includes:

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros ~ The Lumineers ~ Old Crow Medicine Show  ~ John Butler Trio ~ Brandi Carlile~ Gogol Bordello ~ Citizen Cope ~ Yonder Mountain String Band ~ Trampled by Turtles ~ Railroad Earth ~ Hot Tuna ~ The Infamous Stringdusters ~ Xavier Rudd~ Blitzen Trapper ~ Michael Kiwanuka ~ North Mississippi Allstars ~ Donavon Frankenreiter ~The Devil Makes Three~ Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit ~ Bombino ~ The Hackensaw Boys ~ Delta Rae ~ Ben Sollee ~ Lake Street Dive ~ The Last Bison ~ Rising Appalachia ~ Nahko and Medicine for the People ~ YARN ~ Bright Light Social Hour ~ Baaba Seth  ~Field Report ~Bronze Radio Return ~ Megan Jean and the KFB ~ Lizzy Ross Band ~ Larry and His Flask ~ Spirit Family Reunion ~ Boston Boys~ L Shape Lot ~ Yancarlos Sanchez ~ Primate Fiasco ~ Blue Mule ~ Cheick Hamala ~ Doug and Telisha Williams Band ~ Furnace Mountain ~ Freeman & Williams ~ Reverend Frank Newsome~ The Green Boys ~The Hey Boys ~ Westbound Rangers ~ Whitetop Mountain Band  ~ Juggle This! ~ Hypnotist Matthew James ~ Jared BonNer ~ Mr Robb ~Peter Irish~ Tyler Fyer & The Lucky Dare Devil Thrill Show ~ Miracle Fish Puppets ~ Brother Whit and Minerva ~ Carbon Jam ~ Carson Diersing ~ Becki the Balloon Lady ~ The Community High Performance Band ~ Music Lab Performers: Gabe Morales Trio ~ Bukuru Celestin ~ Harbor ~ The In Crowd ~ Jayna Brown ~ Bella Fulton & Christina Reinard ~ Kooper Jodoin and More!
